How to play YOX
Can't get past the first floor? Feel like you're not learning anything? Don't worry because this guide will teach you some of the important things you need to know to play the game. There will be spoilers, naturally, but I arranged this guide so that the most important tips are on top. Feel free to stop reading any time.
THE TITLE SCREEN
The first thing you'll see when you load the game is the title. Here, you're given the option to play using keyboard or mouse/touch. This setting cannot be changed until you reload the game. To choose mouse/touch, simply click or tap on the screen, then the highlighted box (the cursor) once it appears. If you want to play with keyboard controls, simply press any key. Now, you can set the controls as the cursor moves through the boxes. Once everything is set, you are now ready to play.
THE GAME LAYOT
After you exit the title screen, you will be taken to the actual game. The largest part of the screen, the right section, is the dungeon floor, where the action happens. On the upper left are your stats and on the lower left is your inventory. This layout persists until you restart the game, which takes you back to the title screen.
THE ADVENTURER
You control an adventurer, represented by a white cross with a blue center. You control them by either clicking/tapping around them, or by pressing the directional keys you set earlier. Their action will depend on the object on the selected direction (if there's any) and the currently selected item in the inventory. In mouse and touch mode, you can click or tap on any tile that has been seen previously to go there automatically (if a path exists and is known).
THE ITEMS
You can pick up certain items if your inventory has space. The first room you'll spawn in will have six items. Picking any of these comes with a cost, so pay attention to your resources. Other objects in the game can provide items, some also requiring a cost. Certain items can be equipped, which places them on a special slot on the inventory. Others are consumed upon use. You'll have to discover their properties on your own.
THE ENEMIES
Generally, any object that moves on its own is an enemy and can harm you. Enemies are colored mostly red (or pink), so you won't miss them. Each type of enemy has a distinct strength and weakness, and they may even behave in a unique way. Try different strategies when facing enemies to figure out the best approach for each type.
THE DUNGEON
Each level presents a new floor of the dungeon. On regular levels, the floor is divided into a 3x3 grid, where each cell is a room. Each floor is filled with enemies, terrain elements and other objects. Terrain elements can affect your movement and vision so use them wisely when dealing with enemies. You can proceed to the next level through stairs or a gate (if unlocked).
And that's all I can spoil about the game. Hopefully, I've shared enough hints to help you play and discover the other mechanics on your own. Have fun!
